How much difference would it make in air space on subs that require .8 cu ft and the box is 0.55 cu ft?

The main difference is when you crank it up the air pressure behind the sub will be greater than the manufacture designed for, and therefor it could cause a mechanical failure to the subs surrounds, essentially air will blow thru the sub from behind. this is different that a thermal failure when you overheat the Voice Coils.. also it will make the sub sound worse. it is always a good idea to stay within the recommend range ideally in the middle. i would personally not go less than 1 cu ft. with this sub. for what your looking at maybe look into a different sub that requires less space.
